Whitney Museum Ticketing Challenge
WMTC-GD-001The Whitney Museum Ticketing Challenge is a personal project inspired by my museum experiences in New York City, with a particular focus on the Whitney Museum of American Art. During the summer of 2023, I had the opportunity to explore exhibitions at renowned institutions such as Cooper Hewitt, MoMA, the Guggenheim, and the Whitney. Through these visits, my appreciation for graphic design—specifically ticketing design—deepened.
Museum tickets are more than just entry passes; they encapsulate the museum’s visual identity and serve as tangible memorabilia, preserving a moment in time. Beyond their practical function of providing dates, locations, and exhibition details, they often carry sentimental value. I found myself jotting down personal reflections on them—notes about the exhibitions, the people I was with, and the overall experience of the day.
During a visit to the Whitney Museum in May 2023 for Project For A New American Century by Josh Kline, I noticed inefficiencies in the ticketing system. Visitors received two nearly identical vertically oriented tickets, one of which had a largely blank reverse side. Additionally, outdated COVID-19 information was still present. This observation sparked an opportunity to reimagine the ticket’s design with a focus on:
- Sustainability – Reducing unnecessary duplication and material waste
- Clarity – Presenting essential information at a glance
- Evolution – Enhancing the current ticketing system rather than simply rearranging elements
This project is an independent design exploration, created for educational purposes only. It is not affiliated with the Whitney Museum of American Art.*
