50 Chairs

50C-GD-001

50 Chairs is a design-driven archival book that reexamines the way we perceive seating. Initially conceived as an exercise in book design and formatting, the project evolved into a deeper exploration of chairs as sculptural objects—shaped by personal experiences and newfound perspectives.

The inspiration for 50 Chairs began with a discovery: Modest Furniture, a small yet compelling design store in Antwerp, Belgium, that showcased an eclectic range of 20th-century furniture. This sparked an interest in archiving furniture through a curated visual format. However, the true turning point came in early 2024, when the purchase of a bright blue Herman Miller Eames Molded Plastic Chair replica unexpectedly reshaped the project’s direction.

While cleaning and repositioning the chair, an unconventional perspective emerged—placing it on its side revealed a new sculptural quality, stripping it of its conventional function. This realization became the foundation of 50 Chairs, where seating is explored beyond utility, instead viewed through rare and often-overlooked angles. The book presents a curated selection of 50 unique and contemporary chairs, sourced from Modest Furniture, each chosen for its distinct approach to design.

By challenging the traditional way we see chairs, 50 Chairs invites readers to rethink everyday objects, appreciating them not just as tools but as evolving forms of design and art.

This project is an independent design exploration, created for educational purposes only. It is not affiliated with the Modest Furniture.*
